Vegreville’s project, a Weekend Coffee Chat, is addressing the social isolation and mental health struggles that have been pervasive since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic through a drop-in peer support group. The group is member-driven, ensuring their needs are addressed without judgement in a non-clinical environment. This support group provides an opportunity to reach community members who are struggling with their mental health at times when other services tend to be closed and offers connection to other members. It also acts as a bridge to other resources that may be identified to better support the needs of the group and allows for a full range of options for those struggling with their mental health.
From our Animator
Individuals who are newer to the community and haven’t had an opportunity to meet others due to the community restrictions (Covid), are attending the program and have said that this has been a great way to meet others and not have any expectations placed on them. Individuals have been able to foster relationships and connections in a safe environment that they then access beyond the program hours. Individuals have become more ready to share struggles, challenges, and ideas with each other during the meetings.
