Gibbon's project builds on the success of previous Rural Mental Health initiatives, which established an inclusive community space where residents could connect, access resources, and support their wellbeing. While this space successfully fostered ongoing connections, the overwhelming response to small-scale events revealed a pressing need for more structured, community-led programming to further strengthen social connections and address mental health needs.
In response, this project focuses on fostering connection and wellbeing through a variety of activities tailored to meet community needs. Key events like "Meet the Community Night" and "Hometown Weekend" will invite hundreds of residents into their community space to connect, share resources, and experience the benefits of belonging. Pop-up events during local gatherings, such as Pioneer Days and the Truth and Reconciliation event, will allow Gibbons to reach diverse voices where they are.
Gibbons will expand their much-loved community space with additions like loanable outdoor wellness items, a larger gathering table, and a cozy fireplace to enhance comfort and connection. Monthly wellness-focused activities - including art therapy, yoga for mental health, and gardening workshops - will bring residents together in supportive, low-pressure settings.
To amplify mental health conversations, the will organize a Mental Health Week event in partnership with local organizations, offering inclusive programming for seniors, adults, and youth. Together, these initiatives aim to nurture a stronger, healthier rural community where everyone feels valued and supported.
