Every community has strengths - they can change from time to time but need to be identified and nurtured through strategic direction. At times when we take inventory, we discover that the strengths aren't as strong or usable as we need them to be. The primary focus for Sylvan Lake is re-discovering what their strengths are and what they, as a community, can do to strengthen them. Sylvan Lake will update their Community Social Master Plan, originally created in 2016, to provide a current snapshot of their current strengths and how they can develop strategies to strengthen them.
Additionally, this project will continue to build on their food security strategy of encouraging individuals to be more self-sufficient by growing their own food and increasing their social connections through the community gardens and the annual Growing Gardeners event. A new extension of these initiatives will be the Collective Kitchen program where community members can come together and prepare delicious and healthy meals to take home to share with their families.
Sylvan Lake saw great buy-in from the community with the micro-grants they offered last year and they will continue with these grants hoping to grow awareness of mental health and social connectedness throughout their community at the basic neighbourhood level.
